I hiked and painted in Glacier National Park today. When the day was nearly over, I set up camp above Haystack Falls which is one of the most stunning visual features in the park. When camping in the Rockies, it’s always vital to keep both eyes and ears open for grizzly bears, and this night was no exception. The night was especially quite and still. I had just crawled into my sleeping bag since the nights come early and cold this time of year in the northern Rockies. I fell asleep and later was awakened by the movement of rocks rolling down the hillside near my camp. Startled awake, I listened for the heavy rumblings of a bear but this was different. I opened my tent door by pulling the zipper down to peek out and see what was going on. The night sky was illuminated by a full moon so brightly that it felt like day light. I look up above me, and saw a great white ghost-like shape making its way along the shear cliff. I could clearly see that it was a Glacier Park Mountain Goat who was probably as interested in me as I was in him. Startled by the sound that my zipper made, the magnificent goat froze, as did I, and after a moment he went on his way up the edge of the falls and over the ridge. I felt excited and inspired, and found it hard to go back to sleep; so I sat on a rock in the moonlight, made a few notes in my journal, and painted until dawn.
