Christmas Day in Yosemite Valley Stefan Baumann 2003
Artist’s Comments
In 2003 I lived in San Francisco, and during the Christmas holiday I loved to go to the Sierras (especially Yosemite) to reconnect with memories of my visits to the National Parks as a child. I left early at 5:00 am, drove about 3 hours before I entered Yosemite Valley, and then went to a predetermined destination on the valley floor. After taking some time to reunite with the vistas around me, I chose a view of the park, set up along the road, and I painted a little landscape to celebrate the wonderful day.
On this Christmas Day, I set up on top of a 4-foot snow bank with my painting easel balanced between a boulder and chunks of snow. The air was crisp and very cold. All the branches were encased by beautiful, glistening white frost. I painted quickly to prevent my fingers from freezing. It was so cold that I had to add alcohol to my paint to keep it from freezing. This painting is part of a Christmas collection that I painted each year to capture the magic of the season.
