Artist’s Comments
As part of my California “Old Mission” series, I painted the Mission in San Juan Bautista. Although painting the beauty of nature is my passion, I am also intrigued by historical places and buildings that humans created for shelter and community gatherings when they settled in nature. By painting structures like old barns, old houses and Missions, I am able to tell stories in my paintings of people settling the wilderness of America.
With this painting, I celebrate the courage and dedication of early Franciscan padres and local native Americans who constructed 22 Missions in California along the El Camino Real.
