Our afternoon efforts while hiking south from Drakes Bay on the Point Reyes National Seashore were rewarded today with a spectacular view of an outcropping of rocks along the Pacific ocean that were being heavily bombarded by the incoming sea. My canvas was wet from the sea mists and my feet were soaked in water as the incoming sea forced it way onto the shore to reclaim its spot. Behind me even more waves challenged me to retreat, but I continued to sketch in spite of the threatening sounds of the Coastal Thunder that echoed between the jagged rocks. The ever-changing light cast shadows and the brilliant highlights captured at the edge of the crashing waves inspired me to paint on. Concerned that my efforts would be washed away, I made my last painting strokes and retreated to the safety of the beach where I watched my perch disappear under water.
This is why I paint from nature.
