Among the Giants, Sequoia National Park by Stefan Baumann
Artist’s Comments
Journal: May 16 2006
Today I hiked along a steep old Indian trail that has a vertical relief of nearly 13,000 feet. The air is thin, but my hike is easy since the terrain is flat and interesting. Wild daisies are abundant along with many other varieties of wild flowers. I sketched a family of old growth trees that captured the grand feeling of being in a forest of giant Sequoia trees in the southern Sierra Nevada mountain range. This National Park was established on September 25 1890 when the forest of Sequoias was set aside for future generations by being spared from the loggers ax. This painting is a tribute to all of the trees that have been lost to extensive logging but are now protected by our National Park System.
