Artist’s Comment
While I was painting plein air on the Yosemite valley floor, I noticed an Osprey soaring along the top edge of the valley swooping down over the Merced river with her talons extended, catching an unexpected fish, and then returning back up to her nest. I was curious about where this Osprey’s nest was located. I was familiar with the hidden trails that the Modoc Indian tribe who inhabited this valley used to traveled up to the top of the ridge of the canyon. I made my way to where I witnessed the Osprey returning to her nest with her catch. Before she landed, I walked at eye level with the Osprey as if I were part of her wing, soaring with the updrafts that lifted her. As I continued to follow her, a mother bear stopped me in my tracks and out of respect for the bear and to not disturb her more, I retreated and went back down the mountain.
Nature is magical, and painting nature is a gift of life.
